The sexual harassment allegations levied upon Sen. Al Franken have reached a head after a collective of women senators from the Democratic Party are calling for the Minnesota lawmaker’s resignation on Wednesday (Dec. 6). Sen. Franken has been both defiant and apologetic, but this has been the first time his own party has effectively turned the tables on him.

CNN reports:

Six female Democratic senators called on Sen. Al Franken to resign Wednesday, marking the first time any senator has called on the Minnesota Democrat to leave office as allegations of sexual harassment against him continue to mount.

In a statement on Facebook, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand wrote: “While Senator Franken is entitled to have the Ethics Committee conclude its review, I believe it would be better for our country if he sent a clear message that any kind of mistreatment of women in our society isn’t acceptable by stepping aside to let someone else serve.”

Franken has been open in calling for an investigation into his alleged behavior but has not shown signs he was willing to relinquish his Senate seat.
